'CAREER PATHS': June 2002

ST. LOUIS BROWNS/BALTIMORE ORIOLES 1953-54: Larsen spent his rookie season with the Browns going 7-12, and headed east with the franchise to Baltimore.  In the Orioles inagural season he posted a miserable 3-21 record.

NEW YORK YANKEES 1955-59: Larsen turned things around after joining the Yankees.  He went 9-2 in 1955 starting and coming out of the bullpen.  He followed it up with another strong season in 1956, going 11-5.  It was in the World Series following that season, however, that he gained immortality pitching a perfect game vs. Brooklyn.  He went 10-4 in '57, 9-6 in '58, and 6-7 in '59 before being dealt to the Kansas City Athletics in the offseason in the trade that brought Roger Maris to New York.

KANSAS CITY ATHLETICS 1960-61:  Larsen did not adjust to his new surroundings well, going 1-10 with a 5.38 ERA in 1960.  He appeared in 8 games in 1961 before getting dealt to the White Sox.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX 1961:  Larsen performed well in his only season with the White Sox, posting a 7-2 record.

SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS 1962-64:  Larsen posted a 12-12 record in 2+ seasons coming out of the Giants bullpen.  He appeared in 3 games in the 1962 World Series against his former team, the Yankees.

HOUSTON ASTROS 1964-65:  Larsen apeared in 31 games as an Astro, starting eleven.  He posted a 4-8 record in parts of two seasons.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES 1965:  Larsen returned to the place where his career had began in 1965, performing well mostly out of the bullpen.  He posted a 1-2 record with a 2.67 ERA in his second stint in Baltimore.

CHICAGO CUBS 1967:  After spending the 1966 season in the minors, Larsen broke back into the bigs with the Cubs in '67.  He appeared in only three games out of the bullpen for the Cubs, posting a 9.00 ERA.
Larsen retired with a 81-91 record and a 3.78 ERA.  Despite those lackluster stats, Larsen is still remembered today for his perfect game in the 1956 World Series.
