'CAREER PATHS': Fall 2005

San Francisco Giants 1991-95:  Clayton, the 15th overall pick in the 1988 draft, made his major league debut in September 1991.  In 1993, his first as a regular, Clayton hit .282, but slumped to .236 and .244 in 1994-95.  In December of 1995, he was shipped to St. Louis in a five player deal.

St. Louis Cardinals 1996-98: In St. Louis, Clayton was asked to take over for Ozzie Smith.  He hit .277 and stole 33 bases in 1996 and .266 with 30 steals in 1997 en route to his only All Star selection.  In July 1998, he was again included in a five player trade, this time to Texas.

Texas Rangers 1998-2000:  Clayton’s time in Texas was highlighted by his 1999 campaign when he hit a career high .288.  In December 2000, he was dealt to the White Sox for two players.

Chicago White Sox 2001-02: The slick fielding shortstop hit .263 and .251 in his two years on the South Side.  He signed a free agent contract with Milwaukee following the 2002 season.

Milwaukee Brewers 2003: The veteran hit just .228, his lowest since 1992, in his lone season in Beer Town.  A free agent following the season, he signed with Colorado.

Colorado Rockies 2004: Clayton enjoyed an offensive rebirth playing his home games at Coors Field, hitting .279.  Once again a free agent, he inked a deal with Arizona in December 2004.

Arizona Diamondbacks 2005: The journeyman shortstop passed the 1,700 hit plateau with the Diamondbacks.  Not figuring in the teams long-term plans, he will once again test the free agent waters this winter.
