Tim Raines was one of baseball's best all-around players during the 1980s. He
spent the decade battling Rickey Henderson for the title of the games' best leadoff hitter. Raines retired after being diagnosed
with lupus following the 1999 season, but battled the illness well enough to return in 2001. Here is a look at the career
of Tim Raines.
MONTREAL EXPOS 1979-90: Raines established himself as the NL's best leadoff hitter
with Montreal during the 80s. He led the league in stolen bases 4 straight years (81-84), in runs scored twice (83 & 87),
and won a batting title in 86 hitting .334. Raines appeared in 7 All Games including the 1987 contest in Oakland in which
he won the games' MVP.

CHICAGO WHITE SOX 1991-95: Raines was traded to Chicago for OF Ivan Calderon before
the 91 season. After a year of adjustment, he hit .294 and .306 in 92 and 93 respectively. After that his production began
to drop off and he left the Windy City via free agency.

NEW YORK YANKEES 1996-98: Acting as a part time DH and reserve OF, Raines helped
the Yanks to 2 World Series titles (96 & 98). 1998 was his best in pinstripes - he hit .290 in 109 games.

OAKLAND ATHLETICS 1999: Raines switched coasts for the 99 season, signing with
Oakland as a free agent. Injuries limited him to 59 games and he hit only .215.

MONTREAL EXPOS 2001: After sitting out the 2000 season because of lupus Raines
returned to the site of his former glories. He was in the Expos opening day lineup, starting in left field.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES 2001: Raines was dealt to Baltimore during the season's final
week to play with his son, Tim Raines Jr. The pair became only the second father-son combo to appear in a game together (the
Griffeys were the other in 1991). Raines finished the 2001 with 808 career stolen bases; 5th All Time.

FLORIDA MARLINS 2002: Raines signed a minor league contract with Florida in February. The Marlins hope he
will add veteran leadership to their young team.
